You Are Not El Chapo

On Behalf of | Feb 8, 2019 | Drug Crimes

The trial of alleged drug kingpin Joaquin Guzman, more commonly known as El Chapo, continues to make news this week as the jury deliberates his fate. One thing remains clear: he is a unique defendant.

Fun with costumes

A man claiming to be a relative of El Chapo was taken into custody after sitting in an area of the courtroom reserved for family. He was released into the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, where it is expected he will face the music for several outstanding warrants.

Drinking from the barrel of a gun

In a sign of confidence, or perhaps hubris, El Chapo’s lawyers tweeted a picture of a gun-shaped tequila bottle that they hope to drink from to celebrate a not-guilty verdict.

Such oddities and confidence are commonplace in the world of El Chapo, a man who has escaped authorities more than once over the years and is believed to have avoided extradition for an extended period as a result of bribes paid to powerful authorities in Mexico.

You are not El Chapo

You will not be able to rely on the government to protect you in the event you are ever charged with a drug-related crime; your best bet is seeking the counsel of an experienced criminal defense attorney.

Instead of attempting to bribe law enforcement or prosecutors, you are better off taking advantage of the right to remain silent. Instead of shopping for a tequila gun, you are better off soaking up the advice of a proven defense lawyer. When your freedom and reputation are at stake, the time for costumes and games is over.
